A preparatory survey and study are currently being commissioned for the upgrade of the port of Nacala in the northern part of Mozambique. Being the gateway port of the northern part of Mozambique and neighbouring landlocked countries via the Nacala Corridor, Nacala Port has been playing important roles in the international trade of the country. The facilities of the port have been time worn and need rehabilitation. Above all, to cope with the growing economic activities in the region, the port requires capacity expansion toward the coming decades. The study has been commenced to propose short, medium and long-term development plans of the port as well as the priority project for the rehabilitation of the existing facilities. Whilst the study aims at urgent rehabilitation of the timeworn port facilities it also shall elaborate and propose phased development plans up to 2030. The phased port development plans should be intended to support and promote the socioeconomic activities of its hinterlands. The plan also should keep step with the developments of access land transportation systems. The survey is conducted by JICA (Japanese International Cooperation Agency) for the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
